🇺🇸 My name is Jiaqi Liu. I graduated from U of I with a Bachelor’s degree on Engineering Physics (Computational Quantum Mechanics) and Master’s degree on Computer Science (Big Data & Cloud Computing), had full-stack internship at Fortune 500 Grainger Inc.1, and worked full-time at Yahoo for 4 years as a Software Engineer in Bay Area.

Why I Believe in AI#

In my early career as a Software Engineer from 2016 to 2025, I had experienced what it called “Stackoverflow-oriented” or “Google-oriented” programming: whenever I needed to deal with a bug or check something technical real quick, I googled that, hit the top stackoverflow result, and picked up what I was looking for (most of the time without even looking at the question at all). That basically was my toolbox all the time. Here is an example of how I used to quickly look up a particular git rebase command:

Beginning in 2024, however, I noticed everytime when I asked Google the same way, it almost always stuck an “AI-generated” answer up to the top of search results. Having been almost anti-AI, I always ignored that initially, but the increasingly high-quality AI-generated answers, whether it’s a piece of clean code snippet or a nuanced solution for fixing a bug, slowly neutralized my former view. I started to use its answer occasionally, later on often, and ultimately almost always. This gradual adaption of AI into my daily works hit its radical influence on my life in late July 2025 when I discovered that Google Gemini could perform automatic code review on GitHub pull request and I can still remember, when I tried it 2 months after its general release, how I was amazed by its sheer accuracy at a level that almost no human can ever compare:

This is the moment when AI hit my pain-point - longing for good code reviews for my Software Engineering works. Having been truly benefited from it, I fully embraced AI, started learning all aspects of it, and eventually became an AI advocate.

As I keep interacting with AI daily, I start to realize AI fits in one side of the two prevailing views of this world:

  1. Determinism: Given an initial condition, the future has all been pre-determined. No one can alter the course of the universe or the destinies of human beings. This is the doctrine philosophy behind Newtonian Mechanics, General Relativity, computer systems, and AI.
  2. Libertarianism: We believe in free-will and we are free to choose. The future is in our hands not because we are programmed to but because we choose to. This is the guiding principle of Quantum Mechanics, Parallel Universe, Quantum computer, and free human
Throughout history, tremendous efforts have been put to reconcile them
  • Ordinary Lives: people harness rationality and emotion inside a single soul

  • Philosophy: the development of Compatibilism that seeks the common ground between Determinism and Libertarianism

  • Science: the attempt to unify General Relativity and Quantum Mechanics since Albert Einstein

  • Public Media: the discussions around the fight between radical determinism of Skynet and the brave libertarianism hold by human resistance depicted in movie Terminator and the like

The future depends on reconciling two opposing worldviews of Humanity’s Libertarianism, the capacity for unpredictable choice, and the Machine’s Determinism, represented by the rigid logic of the force of nature. Neither side can survive by simply suppressing it. Both must evolve “together”, which means that the machine world’s need for purpose and order must find a way to coexist with humanity’s unpredictable nature and its freedom to choose. The only way to get there is together, where a genuine, lasting peace - a real future - cannot be achieved through victory or dominance, but only through a new form of coexistence. Such hope and belief of the synthesis between human and machine in the future world is the reasons why I believe tomorrow is so exciting and a challenging but promising future is yet to come.
